Leisl Hymes, PT DPT received her Doctorate Degree in Physical Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is also a LSVT BIG certified therapist, trained to provide evidence based treatment of Parkinson’s Disease. Prior to returning to school for physical therapy, Leisl taught elementary school (kindergarten, first and second grades) in Charlottesville, VA for ten years. That experience in teaching allows Leisl to provide a strong patient-education focused approach in therapy.
Leisl and her husband, Ken, have two sons, Zachary and Tieghan. Leisl’s career change from teaching to physical therapy was prompted by her son Zachary, who was born with a limb deficiency. He received physical therapy intermittently from 4 months on. When Zach was 2 ½, he had a below the knee amputation. He is a patient at The Gait Center, an active student, soccer player, and is just beginning to learn fencing!
Leisl has an undergraduate degree in music from Ohio University in clarinet performance. She continues to play music(currently bass) with her husband at church and in a small swing band, “The Shabby Sheiks.” She enjoys putting her skills to good use and has organized and performed at several benefit concerts for Walking Free/Physicians for Peace and Prosthetics Outreach Foundation.
We are fortunate to have Leisl working at The Gait Center. She is passionately committed to helping patients with gait difficulties achieve the highest possible engagement with all aspects of life!
